Blue Diamonds, The Great Love Of Investors

It may seem that there are many blue diamonds in the world simply because we keep on reading about new world record on the news. we have heard about The Blue moon of Josephine, the famous 12.03 carat Fancy Vivid Blue diamond that was the only blue diamond to break a $4 million per carat price. The Oppenheimer Blue Diamond, a 14.62 carat Fancy Vivid Blue, is the current world record holder for the total price paid for a Diamond. what about a more affordable investment?

I decided to look at price performance of Fancy Vivid Blue diamonds in the smaller 1-2 carat range, to see how their value has performed in the last 10-15 years. let the numbers below speak for themselves…

1-2 carat Fancy Vivid Blue

1-2 carat blue performance

This simple Table Shows a performance over a 14 year span a total return of 593.63%. This return is larger than the performance of Gold, Oil, Platinum as commodities. It has performed better than the S&P 500, Dow Jones, and NASDAQ over the same period of time. In Fact it has Performed better than Berkshire Hathaway Share price!

I Guess the next question would be about the future…will the future perform better, the same, or will prices fall. The truth is that no ones knows for sure what the future will bring, but we can be certain about a few things:

  • There will be even less Blue diamonds on the market in the future
  • There is more wealth accumulated every year, and normally when you have more money, you are willing to pay a premium on rare items, including diamonds.

The result is that demand will surpass supply by at least 5 to 2. and we all know basic Economic rules about supply and demand….

Do not be surprised if prices are higher than $1 million er carat, since the majority of transactions are private, and the auction houses represent a minority amount of transactions.

Good luck finding such a diamond in the world!
