Bonhams And Phillips Auction Houses Go Head To Head Like Sotheby’s And Christie’s

We have seen Bonhams and Phillips following Sotheby’s and Christie’s in the last few years, and they are in third and fourth place (not necessarily in the order mentioned ). Most recently ( September) Bonhams has been sold to the Private Equity Epiris, out of London, of which financial terms have not been disclosed. Both auction houses have been aggressive with their hiring of management positions from the other auction houses. They are working to further grow their businesses.

Both auction houses have been successful in breaking world records of their own for Fancy Color Diamonds.

A 5.64 carat, Fancy Vivid Yellow with Internally Flawless clarity signed Cartier will be offered. The value set by the auction house is $380k to $510k or $67.4k to $90.4k per carat. The ring was acquired from Cartier in 2001 for $530k total. This puts the value of the Vivid Yellow at about $80-$85k per carat back then; a hefty price going back 17 years, but then again, Cartier has a brand name value as well. I wonder how much value will the ring gain these days because of the brand?

A 1.45 carat, Fancy Intense Blue diamond, marquise shape, and VVS1 clarity is offered. It is mentioned that the diamond is potentially Internally Flawless if further polishing occurs, and it might be a minority polish. It is valued between $260k to $380k or $179k to $262k per carat. This is a low valuation for such a diamond. It will easily surpass the estimates, and may sell for as much as twice the high value.
